ACTING – IMPROVISATION:  Ages 15 - ADULT
Beginning Level

Whether you are an actor or not, it’s helpful to be comfortable in a situation where you are called upon spontaneously to speak and move with confidence.  Knowing how to improvise is a skill that can be learned and is lots of fun!  That’s why party games so often center around improvised movement and dialogue (Charades, Twister, Catch Phrase, etc.) and comedy clubs and game shows incorporate so much improv.  Experienced actors are constantly using improvisation skills when they audition or perform.  Invariably things happen that are not intended (forgotten lines, prop or set mishaps, missed entrances) that require an actor to improvise so that the audience doesn’t know whether the mishap was intended or not.  This class will review the basics of improv in movement and dialogue and reinforce what is learned with many exercises and improv games.  Dress for movement!

SKETCH COMEDY WRITING:  Ages 15 - ADULT

Sketch Comedy Writing

Remember all those funny ideas you’ve come up with over the years that you felt could bring down the house on “Saturday Night Live” or “Mad TV”?  Well, now’s your opportunity for them to come to life in our Sketch Comedy Writing class.  Under the direction of the head writer of a Phoenix sketch-comedy/improv group, you’ll learn how to take your kernel of an idea and make it grow, from original idea to character breakdown to writing and re-writing.  Special emphasis will be given to song-parody and the writing of dialogue.  Elementary acting and stage blocking tips will help you see how to make your characters even funnier on stage.  In the course of 10-weeks, you’ll refine your 3-5 minute sketch until it is funny, clever, and has enough satirical commentary to make your audience think when laughing stops.  All students will produce and direct their sketch, culminating with an on-stage performance of your work during the last class of the session.
